December 2012     Dear Santa,      I realize how busy you, the elves, Mrs. Claus, and your 8 reindeer ("oops!", I forgot... 9 including Rudolf!) are right now, but I have a very special request.   Please bring... ******NEW PENCILS****** (a whole bunch), pens, colur crayons, rulers, water bottles, etc. ... to all the wonderful students we have here at Harkins Middle School.  I assure you that most of the HMS students have been nice.  Only a few have been naughty!  But, I'm sure they could still use a few pencils.   Finally, but most importantly, I also want to ask something very big.   Please touch the hearts of every student, their family, HMS staff and administration,... well actually, anyone who works with/for our children and youth and give them the... patience, passion, desire, and wisdom  ...needed to learn, teach, suport, nurture, respect, and LOVE one another.  Ya' I know, we may not always like the things others do, but I want to make sure we still remember to LOVE each other anyway. That's it, that's all. Have a Blessed Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year!   Mrs. J. Mitchell Harkins Middle School   PS:  I almost forgot to remind you how much I like chocolate.  Yes, like you, I know that I'm too fluffy.  So, I'll make you a deal... "I'll stop eating chocolate when you stop eating milk and cookies!" Just say'n! LOL ;)

The second Red Team Grade 8 Exploratory class will start their Digital Photography unit the week of December 3rd to 7th.  Students will be asked if they can bring cameras from home to practice with.  This will allow students to develop skills that can be used behond the classroom using their own equipment.  Also, student that bring a camera will have a choice to work on their own for their first photo assignment.  Otherwise, students will work in small groups using cameras borrowed from our district office.  One very important objective of the photography unit is to learn and practice composition. The attached document includes teaching notes from Mr. Gadd regarding essential photography fundatmentals.  This document will be used as a technical quide as we begin the photographie unit.  Students will not be receiving a copy of this document.  Thus, it is made available here for students' reference.

Blue Team, Grade 6 Post Intensive French students are to find and bring to class an image/picture that represents "l'automne".  It can be from a magazine, Internet, picture, etc. The due date for student images/pictures is Monday, November 19th, 2012.    Students will use these photos to write about "l'automne" and then make a presentation to the class.  Students can use the document camera in the class to project their image on the SmartBoard.  However, the image has to be large enough to project clearly i.e. approimately 4" X 6" or larger.    Students have been instructed that if they cannot find an image/picture at home, to look through the magazines in Mrs. Mitchell's class BEFORE THE ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE.  As a reminder, students have student enhancement each day to work on homework while at school!

Terrance Stanley "Terry" Fox, was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research.    Thursday, September 27th is Harkins Middle School 2012 Terry Fox National School Run Day!   In 2011 Harkins Middle raised close to $2000 for the Terry Fox Foundation and its funding of cancer research in Canada.       During the next 5 days, please support the Terry Fox fundraising activities that will be held by Harkins teams.  Through your fundraising contributions and participation in our Terry Fox Run Day, we can remember and support Canadians living with cancer.    This year, let’s beat our 2011 donation and be proud knowing that Harkins Middle School is taking part in helping find cures for cancer.
