For last year's words belong to last year's languageAnd next year's words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.~T.S. Eliot, "Little Gidding"
We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day. ~Edith Lovejoy Pierce
Harkins Middle School wishes everyone happy holidays! Have a restful break and best wishes in the new year. We'll see you Tuesday, January 11th when school recommences in 2011. :)
The local SPCA is overflowing with cats and dogs this year and they desperately need our help.
Mrs Malley has started the annual HMS SPCA Fundraiser. Please bring cat food, dog food, old blankets and towels, kitty litter or cleaning supplies. You can donate loose change at lunch or buy a candy cane to be delivered to a special someone! You can also buy tickets on Rufus the Dog. Tickets are 50 cents or 3 for a dollar. Let's pull together for a great cause Harkins!
Mrs Gillis was beaming with pride last week as she announced that not only did 236 students wear pink to show awareness for bullying, but 750 food items were collected from students and donated to the local foodbank! Harkins cares about our community. Please see the corresponding photogallery: http://hms.nbed.nb.ca/gallery/bullying-awareness-month

Harkins hosted various stakeholders on Friday for a Family Violence Awareness presentation for students. On hand were representatives from the Family Violence Outreach Center, NBCC Student Group "Abuse Busters", the Transition House and the Miramichi Police Force. All spoke about preventing and identifying abusive relationships. Students were particularly moved by a candid talk with Dawn Lynch, whose family was victimized by extreme violence. This presentation tied in well with the culmination of Bullying Awareness Month. Students went away with an important message: Violence is not okay
On Saturday, 34 HMS drama students attended TNB's rendition of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Students were blown away by the elaborate settings, seamless set changes, and dynamic cast. Preceding Treasure Island was an opening act entitled The Marketeer based on WW Boyce Farmers' Market in Fredericton. No long before the curtains rose, HMS students walked directly from the Fredericton Saturday market to the Playhouse for this performance! What a great way to experience and learn about the tradition of the Farmers Market in New Brunswick! It was surely a great time had by all.
Harkins Middle School has recently been designated a SMART Showcase School! Our use of technology in the classroom has earned us this designation. Teachers and students employ SMART software and products (SMARTBoard, SMART Response, Wireless Slate, Document Camera, etc.) daily at Harkins and SMART has recognised our efforts. Bravo HMS! Harkins Recognizes Bully Awareness Month...
Mrs Gillis has been busy preparing challenges that create awareness for bullying and healthy friendships. Poster Challenge 1 comes to an end this Friday.
Friday is Stand Up Day at HMS.
This is a pledge written on the back of the STOOD UP pink t-shirts that some of the staff wear on Stand Upday on the 3rd Friday of November for Anti-Bullying Week.
We are currently searching for a girls basketball coach for our JV team. If you are an interested parent of a player, or just keen on b-ball (or both!) please contact the school at 627-4088 and leave a message. We appreciate any support and welcome the community into our school!
