On Friday December 4th, the Red and Purple teams will travel to NBCC
Miramichi to take part in a Family Violence Awareness Event hosted by
Miramichi Family Violence Prevention Network.
According to MFVPN representatives, for some time now, the Red and Purple teams of Harkins Middle :
"...have been instrumental in promoting the prevention of family
violence...by participating at the vigil in the park (Newcastle) which
take place every year to recognise the National Day of Remembrance and
Action on Violence against Women. This normally occurs on or before
December 6th which marks the day when fourteen young women were
murdered at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal.
This year, the vigil will take place at the Community College in
conjunction with the Family Violence Awareness campaign in which the
second year victimology students are organizing with the Miramichi
Family Prevention Network. This session will involve keynote speakers,
a presentation of the students' projects, a skit on dating violence and
a memorial to honour the victims of the Montreal Massacre.
We believe this will be a very educational experience for these
students. As well, it will provide them with an opportunity to be more
aware about family violence and perhaps promote prevention in their
school."
